The Order of Freedom

The Order of Freedom

I started writing this blog in 2008, a couple of months before my first “solo” book, How Things Emerge (Kako stvari vznikajo), was published. It is still available in the Slovene language only and is titled The Order of Emergence.

I changed the title to “The Order of Freedom” in 2019. Why?

How emergence emerged

My first book’s main topic was emergence, as the title explains. Although I still recognize appalling ignorance around the concept of emergence, it does not make sense for me to prove this concept’s importance again and explain it f, as you can find arguments in many posts here if you click tags like #economy, #freedom, #homonism, #brand, #evolution, #values, and so on. Those of you who believe in intelligent design, central planning, Keynesian economy, national and supra-national development plans and projects, collective primacy, state-governed economy, linear causality, the supremacy of one race, supremacy of one clan, blank slate, …, will not be convinced by my writings even if published by Random House.

For each of the concepts mentioned above, there is at least one post in this blog, and several other authors are destroying them much better than I, as a non-native speaker and a non-academic person, can ever do. I have accepted that you, believers in the abovementioned concepts, represent most of the global “intellectual sphere.” In contrast, we, on the other hand, are accepted but simultaneously dismissed. Hayek won the Nobel prize, but Gunnar Myrdal, who won the same year, never accepted the challenge to discuss his ideas with his opponent. Yet there are Myrdal ideas that all national economies are following in practice despite the fact he is now almost forgotten while Hayek grows through time. In contrast, national economies, but perhaps the Argentinian with Milei, forgot him.

Disclosure about reductivism and dualism

Please note that rejecting intellectual design says nothing about religion. Religion has nothing to do with intelligent design. Religion is a set of practical values and guidance that allows us to navigate the non-reducible complexities of life. This is precisely what the theory of emergence teaches us. Since life cannot be reduced to an algorithm, we need a set of apriori values/religion (s). Kurt Goedel proved that in each closed system, there is an element that that system cannot explain. There should also be such an element in our UUniverse(closed system). That element is usually called God, which cannot be reduced to our Universe, which is the ontological dualism I’m talking about.

The above paragraph explains my disagreement with Daniel Dennet, whom I called my memetic father. In all his wisdom, he was so stuck to his religion of monistic materialism that he passed away at peace with himself despite being wrong.

You will not like this paragraph.

Dear reader, I have to warn you that it was not a mistake to claim that if you believe in a state-governed economy, you also believe in intelligent design and the supremacy of one race. You might not accept this fact, and you might feel another way, but you cannot avoid this fact as much as you can not avoid gravity. As a progressive, you believe that the State should regulate (intelligent design) our lives while you deny God. You can peacefully wait for the last minutes of your life in such a cognitive dissonance.

How the issue of freedom emerged

And here we are. Emergence for complex systems is like gravity for mass. By the same token, something “unexpected” emerged from my continuous writing over the past 15 years: the issue of freedom.

Note that freedom does not emerge; the issue of freedom emerges. Freedom represents a substance of any complex system, whether physical or social. It is a powerful concept in physics, not only in philosophy, as Stuart Kauffman and his colleagues at Santa Fe Institute proved in the last quarter of the 20th century. It is a basic concept, the fundamental value that comes first, and that, as such, is a precondition for the emergence of order. And as expected one should understand order in physical, biological (genetic and memetic) and social realities. A degree of freedom opens the option for a difference that makes a difference, as a fundamental concept of genetics and memetics. A degree of freedom is the cornerstone of entropy and information theory. And so on and so on.

And Homonism at last

It is thus suitable to refocus this blog from emergence to the precondition of all emergencies: freedom and freedoms. Therefore, I have introduced an entirely novel concept of homonism that allows us to understand freedom in opposition to humanism. So, the last couple of years have already been devoted to this fundamental value, and no surprise, the book I published in 2022 is called Homonism.
